Naughty Dog Job Listing Hints That Microtransactions Could Be Coming

Naughty Dog is working on a standalone multiplayer experience, and this is likely the anticipated multiplayer experience based on The Last of Us Part 2. Right now, it seems they are planning for a suitable in-game monetization system for the project.

Since the launch of The Last of Us Part 2, Naughty Dog has been pretty tight-lipped about the future projects of the studio, and even the previously promised multiplayer mode for their latest hit.

Back in 2020, in an attempt to avoid further delays for the launch of The Last of Us Part 2, the development team decided to drop off the multiplayer section at launch and delayed it to a later date as post-launch content for the game.

Today, over a year after the game’s launch, we don’t even have a clear vision about the post-launch content for The Last of Us Part 2 except for some unofficial shots and clips that shed some light on the upcoming multiplayer mode for the title.

That being said, a new job listing on Naughty Dog’s webpage might hint at the imminent announcement of The Last of Us Factions as a multiplayer expansion for last year’s hit as the developer is looking for opportunities to design in-game monetization systems for the project.

job listing suggests, this open position is related to the “studio’s first standalone multiplayer game!” That rings a bell, doesn’t it? Although we do know that Naughty Dog is currently working on a brand new IP as well as an unannounced project, the definition above is well-suited for The Last of Us Factions than any other project.

The listed role will be responsible for designing a player-friendly economy that increases “in-game revenue and lifetime value while respecting the player experience.”

It’s yet to be seen whether Factions would be a free-to-play experience like Halo Infinite‘s multiplayer, or will be available as a paid product at a lower price compared to the base game. That being said, looking for in-game monetization could be a hint that the developers might pursue a free-to-play approach.

The Last of Us Part 2 is now available on PS4 and PS5. The game did not receive a Director’s Cut Edition on PS5 similar to other exclusive projects of the series, but with the imminent announcement of the multiplayer expansion, there might be a bundle in the future.
